There are quite a few different reasons that we choose to exercise. Often, the primary driver is to improve our appearance. This doesn’t mean you’re shallow - ours is a society that places an emphasis on appearance.
But along with looking better, regular exercise packs some incredible health benefits. You probably know that already, but what you may not know is that exercise actually makes your cells biologically younger.
That means that while the calendar may say you are 40, your cells are that of a 31 year old.
This is why people who exercise regularly tend to look so much younger than those who do not.
And this also has a lot to do with the myriad health benefits that you get from exercise. A heart, for example, that is biologically 9 years younger is going to be less likely to suffer from the diseases of aging.
A recent study by researchers at Brigham Young University looked to better understand the relationship between exercise and “biological age”. The researchers sought to measure the length of telomeres in three groups of people. Those who exercised regularly at high intensity, those who exercised less frequently, and those who did not exercise at all. Telomeres are caps that cover the ends of our DNA strands that protect them from damage.
Telomeres get shorter over time leading to less protection to DNA strands, but this varies from person to person. Telomeres are, therefore, considered a reliable marker for biological aging (the age of a persons cells).
Researchers found that people who had high activity levels had much longer telomeres than both people who did not exercise at all, and people who exercised less frequently and with less intensity.
People who exercised intensely 5 days per week, 30 to 40 minutes per day had telomere lengths that suggested their cells were 9 years younger than people who did not exercise at all, and 7 years younger than people who exercised less frequently and with less intensity.
So as it has always been the case, the most powerful anti-aging medicine currently available is regular intense exercise.
Not only will you look younger and more attractive, you will biologically be younger and stay free of the diseases of aging much longer.
So while your primary motivator may be to be more attractive or to have improved self confidence, it’s good to know that you are quite literally extending your life and health span with an intense exercise program.
So the take home is this:
If you’ve stopped working out, you need to make it a priority and get back to it.
If you are working out, but are just going through the motions and not training hard 4 to 5 days per week, then you need to kick your intensity up a notch.
